The story
Lakshmi emerged from the churning of the milk ocean (Samudra Manthana), rising on a lotus from the foaming waters with such radiance that all the devas and asuras stopped their churning to watch. She chose Vishnu as her consort — and ever since, she has accompanied him in every avatar: as Sita to Rama, as Rukmini to Krishna, as Padmavati to Venkateshwara. The Ashta Lakshmi (eight forms) cover the eight aspects of prosperity: Adi (primal), Dhanya (food/grain), Dhairya (courage), Gaja (wealth), Santana (offspring), Vidya (knowledge), Vijaya (victory), and Dhana (monetary wealth). Lakshmi is mobile — she comes to where she is welcomed and leaves where she is disrespected — which is why cleanliness, gratitude, and right conduct are emphasized in her worship.
