The story
Saraswati flows from Brahma's mouth as the river-goddess of speech and learning. The Sarasvati river, mentioned more than any other in the Rig Veda, was the cradle of Vedic civilization — and the goddess herself is the embodiment of the wisdom inscribed on its banks. She gives Vach (sacred speech), Smriti (memory), and Buddhi (intellect). Her veena symbolizes the harmony of arts and sciences; her book the eternal Vedas; her white swan the discrimination (viveka) that separates milk from water. Students place their books and instruments at her feet during Saraswati Puja and during examinations.
Iconography
Pure white-clad, fair-skinned; four-armed; holding the veena (lute), a book, japa mala, and water pot; seated on a white lotus or swan.
Mantras
